What exactly is competitive dock diving, you ask?

It’s when a dog runs down a 40-foot regulation dock and jumps into a pool or body of water. The dog’s motivation is a floatable toy. DockDogs™ is open to any breed of dog six months or older and any person seven years and older. There are three disciplines in DockDogs™: Big Air™, Extreme Vertical™, and Speed Retrieve™. Each discipline is divided into divisions based on distance, height or speed.

Big Air™ is the long jump for dogs. The dog runs and jumps into the water after a toy. The distance is judged from the end of the dock to where the dog’s tail set breaks the water’s surface.

Extreme Vertical™ is a high jump for dogs. The dog starts off at the 20 foot mark on the dock and jumps up to grab a bumper extended out 8 feet from the end of the dock over the water. The starting height for Extreme Vertical™is 4’6″ and increases in 2″ increments as competition progresses.

Speed Retrieve™ is a race against the clock. At the far end of the pool a bumper is suspended 2″ above the water. The dog is then placed at the 20′ mark on the dock. When given the indicator, the handler releases the dog to run and jump in the pool. The time stops when the dog pulls the toy from the Speed Retrieve™ bracket.

Iron Dog™ is similar to a triathlon. Dogs that are registeres as an Iron Dog™ wil have their best score in each of the three disciplines from the event (Big Air™, Extreme Vertical™, and Speed Retrieve™) calculated from the points table.
